Reporting to the Vice President Operations, Legal Affairs, you will provide legal advice and support with respect to all operational, Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) regulatory matters associated with our Canadian operations.
You will use your expertise to:Provide legal advice, covering a broad scope of regulatory matters and issues with a focus on Canadian regulatory operational applications and approvals including: mining, tailings, in situ, power generation, pipeline, renewable energy and downstream assets and operations
Support the regulatory group and business unit technical experts in the development, and drafting, of regulatory applications, work with applicable regulatory agencies, addressing statements of concern of stakeholders, as well as play a key role in preparation for, and conduct of regulatory hearings
Provide legal support for the regulatory compliance and compliance assurance groups
Develop and lead a network of legal professionals to build competence to support operational regulatory approvals
Conduct and supervise all legal aspects of emergency response for operational environmental, health and safety or non-compliance incidents across Canada, including: leading the legal aspects of internal investigations; responding to external regulator investigations; and ensuring sufficient competence within the legal function to manage legal aspects of incident response
Provide proactive monitoring and advice on emerging operational, environment, health and safety legislation with significant implications for Canadian operations, in conjunction with Suncor’s environment, health and safety, government relations, stakeholder relations and regulatory personnel
Review issues of a sensitive or high profile nature that may have significant strategic impact
Liaise with regulatory agencies and internal partners as appropriate regarding regulatory matters

Must-haves (minimum requirements):LLB or equivalent and membership in Law Society of Alberta
10 years of experience with a substantial specialization on regulatory matters, including large scale oil and gas projects
Exceptional knowledge of regulatory statutes, regulations and processes
Deep understanding and significant experience in the conduct of internal, environmental, health and safety or investigations where there is risk of prosecution or other regulatory enforcement action
A high degree of flexibility and the ability to readily adapt to changes in business priorities and plans
An innovative and creative way of problem solving with a demonstrated ability to work in a team environment towards achieving a desired business outcome within corporate and legal parameters
Strong motivation and initiative, with the drive to collaborate with others, maintain positive relationships across different teams, and make decisions with integrity in order to achieve the best results and deliver the most value

Where you’ll be working, your work schedule, and other meaningful information:You will work out of our Calgary head office, located in the Suncor Energy Centre at 150 – 6th Ave S.W.
Hours of work are a regular 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday, with the potential for extended work hours based on business needs
Periodic travel to Suncor facilities across Canada
