Senior Operations Technician

Role synopsis BP is seeking to recruit a Senior Operations technician to join an established shift team working in the Acetyls Technology Development team (ATD) at Hull, which is part of global Petrochemicals Technology. ATD provides the research capability and expertise to develop new Chemical Process options for the Acetyls business, with projects ranging from laboratory scale operations through to operating fully recycling Demonstration plants. The primary focus of this role will be to work as an integral part of a highly skilled and motivated shift team to operate a dedicated demonstration scale plant, which is a critical step towards the commercial deployment of a next generation technology. Full, specialist training on the unit operation will be given. This role involves working as part of a shift team working a 12 hour shift pattern, with lone working. Key accountabilities Lead the safe operation of Demonstrations Units, Laboratory units and associated equipment to agreed work programs, providing operations inputs into planning and troubleshooting activities. Ensure the highest standards of HSSE are maintained in unit operations. Day to day operation of the demonstration unit, monitoring, controlling and evaluating process parameters/variables, taking corrective action to maintain the safe and efficient operation of the unit. Record and report shift logs, both verbally and in writing along with leading operational meetings with the day technology team. Prepare and isolate plant/equipment for maintenance to include drafting and issuing of Control of Work procedures. Act as Operations SPA for plant upsets, shutdowns, re-starts and parks, following plant procedures and signing off activities to ensure safe and reliable operations. You will ensure that appropriate controls, risk assessments and approvals are in place before activities which fall outside of standard procedures are followed, and proactively take steps to ensure compliance with required procedures. Maintain and operate analytical systems to ensure accurate analysis of process streams, take samples and liaise with Analytical personnel. Provide operational support and input into the design and execution of engineering modifications for operational units within ATD. Essential Education A good level of formal qualifications (A level/GCSE/NVQ or equivalent) in relevant technical subjects Essential experience and job requirements Experience in chemical plant or refinery shift operations is essential Good aptitude for IT systems You'll have a track record of successfully following complex procedures or working instructions and will have ideally gained experience of working in a hazardous environment where safe working procedures were of paramount importance. Have strong communication skills and be a logical thinker, comfortable with independent decision making and being able to articulate issues and observations to a support team for resolution Be able to manage the delivery of competing priorities and operational complexity Proven ability to influence key stake holders including chemists and engineering discipline specialists. Other Requirements (e.g. Travel, Location) This involves working as part of a shift team working a 12 hour shift pattern, with lone working. A shift allowance is payable. Desirable criteria & qualifications Practical experience in the use of Distributed Control and IT systems. Familiarity with on-line analytical techniques (eg GC, NIR). Role synopsis The Acetyls Business Unit is one of the business units making up the Petrochemicals Strategic Performance Unit, within the Downstream Segment. It is a business engaged in the entire value chain from manufacturing through to marketing and sales. The Acetyls BU is one of the world's leading manufacturers of acetic acid and its derivatives, and owns & deploys its leading technology in Europe, Asia and US. BP Hull Site is the European manufacturing facility for the Acetyls Business Unit and is of significant strategic importance to the Global Business, with a focus on Manufacturing Petrochemicals as well as Research & Technology. The European Acetyls market is forecast to grow steadily over the next few years and the business is committed to a growth agenda to capture a substantial portion of this market growth. Our core product range is Acetic Acid and Acetic Anhydride. You'll be expected to complete all tasks assigned to you by your supervisor safely, to the required quality and within the expected time. This covers the full range of investigation/troubleshooting, planned repair scopes, preventative and predictive maintenance, and the installation of new equipment 2 x Instrument Technician Key accountabilities Safety is paramount and you'll need to stop the job if unsafe or unsure and seek the relevant safety guidance Carry out tasks as defined by your core trade (Instrumentation) In addition to your core trade and where you have the required competence e.g. Lifting and slinging, pipefitting you'll have the opportunity to work more widely. Our products are produced using our industry-leading proprietary technologies, which in some cases we monetise through licensing to third parties. We focus on deploying that technology to create competitive advantage. We also produce speciality products such as metaxylene and are partnering in a new venture that uses our acetic anhydride to treat wood chips to produce high performance medium-density fibreboard.
